R&D Engineer – Computer Vision

About the Role
Africa Space Works is looking for an R&D Computer Vision Engineer to join its Space AI team.
You will design and develop AI solutions that extract meaningful insights from multi-source geospatial and space data. This includes combining satellite imagery and geospatial datasets with GIS layers, weather data, sensor measurements, and other complementary information.
The role focuses on building robust, scalable, and reproducible AI pipelines for operational space applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop AI and computer vision solutions for Earth observation and space applications.
- Build data fusion pipelines combining satellite imagery with geospatial, sensor, and auxiliary datasets.
- Develop deep learning models for object detection, segmentation, image classification, change detection, depth estimation, and related computer vision tasks.
- Develop reusable datasets, annotation workflows, benchmarking protocols, and evaluation frameworks.
- Collaborate with software engineers to integrate research into production-ready systems.
- Produce clear technical documentation and communicate research findings.
Required Qualifications
- M.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
- Strong programming skills in Python.
- Experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow and Hugging Face.
- Solid understanding of computer vision, image processing, and deep learning fundamentals.
- Experience with Git and collaborative software development workflows.
- Familiarity with OpenCV, NumPy, SciPy, and other scientific Python libraries.
- Familiarity with CUDA and high-performance computing environments.
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and scientific curiosity.
- Excellent technical writing, documentation, and communication skills.
The following experience is considered an advantage:
- C++
- GIS, remote sensing, or geospatial data processing
- Previous experience as a computer vision or AI engineer
- Cloud platforms, Docker, or Linux environments
- AI model deployment or MLOps pipelines
- Rust for high-performance AI or computer vision applications
