Algeria to Build First AI-Dedicated Data Center in Oran
Algeria launches its first artificial intelligence data center in Oran, a strategic project to boost digital sovereignty and innovation under the National AI Strategy 2024–2030.

Oran, March 16, 2025 – Algeria has launched the construction of its first high-performance computing center dedicated to artificial intelligence, marking what officials described as a strategic step toward digital sovereignty.
The foundation stone was laid in Oran’s Akid Lotfi district during a ceremony supervised by Minister of Post and Telecommunications Sid Ali Zerrouki, in the presence of Minister of the Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro-enterprises Noureddine Ouadah and the wali of Oran (Algeria News Gate).
According to the Algerian Press Service (APS), the center will be equipped with latest-generation Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to provide the computational capacity required for advanced artificial intelligence applications.
During the ceremony, Zerrouki underlined that the project aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision for Algeria’s technological development: “This AI computing center is a first for Algeria and aligns with the President’s vision for technological advancement,” he said (Algeria News Gate).
Strategic Role
Officials emphasized that the center will support researchers, universities, and startups, providing the infrastructure needed to foster innovation and support Algeria’s National AI Strategy 2024–2030 (APS).
The Aman Alliance reported that the facility aims to stimulate a dynamic AI ecosystem by giving universities and startups access to high-level computing resources that were previously unavailable in Algeria.
Expanding Digital Infrastructure
As noted by Data Center Dynamics, this project builds on Algeria’s broader investment in digital infrastructure. In November 2024, the People’s National Assembly inaugurated a data center in Algiers, while partnerships with Huawei have been announced to further develop Algeria’s computing capabilities as part of regional cooperation programs.
National Ambition
Algerian authorities reaffirmed the goal for artificial intelligence to contribute 7% of national GDP by 2027, with the Oran AI data center representing a major step toward achieving this target (APS).
